Central zone police to track vehicles using GPS

Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, Jan 30 (UNI) For the first time the central zone of the Tamil Nadu police will introduce a sophisticated Vehicle Tracking System through the Global Positioning System (GPS), with the help of Satellite Image, from February one.

Announcing this here today, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Central Zone M S Jaffar Sait said it is to prevent crime and arrest fleeing criminals quickly. The police had acquired 14 patrol vehicles fitted with GPS gadgets and modern other accessories, he added.

Through the Vehicle Tracking System, the police officials, sitting in the master control room, could track, guide and monitor the GPS-fitted patrol vehicles for quick reaction in order to prevent the criminals from escape after committing crime.

Similarly, the police could easily guide the GPS-fitted patrol vehicles from the control room to watch closely (surveillance) a particular vital installation or any other important building in the city, in case of any distress call.

As part of their three-pronged crime prevention efforts, he said a Hi-tech Wireless Dome Camera (WDC) was installed at the busy traffic junction close to the Head Post Office in the city, as a trial measure to curb traffic-related offences and crimes effectively.
