A R Rahman wins Swaralaya-Kairali-Yesudas award

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 30 (UNI) Well known Music Director A R Rahman has been chosen for this year's Swaralaya-Kairali-Jesudas Award.

Announcing the Award at a press meet, City Corporation Mayor Jayan Babu said noted Malayalam Music Director K Raghavan Master would be conferred with another award, considering his comprehensive contribution to the film industry. The Award carrying a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a citation and a plaque would be presented to Rahman here on February 12 by renowned singer K J Yesudas.

Mr Jayan Babu said the committee had received a message from Rahman that the Award, instituted in the name of Yesudas, was treated as an honour and he would come here to receive it.

However, the Award to Raghavan Master would be given at Thalassery, his native place, he added.

A five-member committee, with State Education and Cultural Minister M A Baby as its Chairman and its members K P Udayabhanu, B Arundhadi, Poovachal Khadar and Rosemary, unanimously selected the winners after considering suggestions from above 1,000 people, he said.

This was for the first time Music Directors were considered for the Award and in the future both Music Directors and singers would be considered for it, Kairali Television Managing Director John Britas and Swaralya Kerala Chapter Chairman G Rajmohan, who were present for the pres meet said.
