11 dead, 14 injured in Surat school tragedy

Surat, Jan 27: Police today confirmed that eleven students were killed and fourteen others injured when a school building collapsed at Vyara area here.

The wall adjacent to a staircase in the four-storyed Adarsh Nivasi Shara, a residential school for tribal girls at Dhichakpur in Vyara area, collapsed last evening.

All the students in the residential school are in the 13-16 age group.

Earlier, sources had said that 13 students had died.

The deceased students have been identified as Thejal Gamit, Dipika Chaudhuri, Nimisha Gamit, Dharmishta Chaudhuri, Usha Gamit, Jayanti Gamit, Rekha Gamit, Pradipa Gamit, Bhamini Patel, Payal Parmar and Mayuri Patel.

The injured have been admitted to the Referral Hospital and the Janak Hospital at Vyara, officials said.

Surat District Collector Vatsala Vasudev said an inquiry would be ordered into the cause of the tragedy.
