Singur villagers break prohibitory orders

Singur, Jan 26 (UNI) Continuing their movement against the proposed small car project, a section of villagers of Singur courted arrest here today, violalting prohibitory orders.

Police said a few thousand people, including women, took out a procession from Beraberi village and marched towards the Singur police station to gherao it under the banner of 'Singur Krishi Jami Raksha Committee'.

The programme, which was in protest against prohibitory orders and ''police atrocities'', had been taken up a day before the 'March to Singur' of the Naxalites to be followed by the 'Singur Chalo' programme of the Trinamool Congress on January 28.

However, a large contingent of police, led by the Superintendent of Police, barred the way of the processionists on Baidyabati-Tarakeswar road, two km off the police station.

Without trying to force ahead, the processionists, led by local Trinamool Congress MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya and Trinamool Youth Congress leader Madan Mitra, held a rally at the spot.

Police later made a token arrest of the people for violating prohibitory orders under section 144 of Criminal Procedure Court and released them.
