Man arrested for killing street dog in Bengal
Kolkata, Jan 26 (UNI) Probably for the first time in West Bengal, a person has been arrested for killing a street dog, thanks to animal rights activist,s campaign against cruelty.
Police arrested Professor Subrata Guha, a teacher of a polytechnic college from his Cossipore residence yesterday under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
He was, however, granted bail.
The charge against Mr Guha was that he had shot dead a stray dog with an air gun in the campus of the North Kolkata polytechnic college on January 15. The professor had allegedly bought the weapon for his son.
But the incident triggered a controversy as the animal rights activists demanded his punishment. An FIR was lodged by the Calcutta Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals forcing police to act.
If convicted under the charge, Mr Guha will have to pay a paltry fine of Rs 50. But a second similar offence might land him behind bars for a period of six months.
