Agartala, Jan 26 (UNI) Tripura Governor Dinesh Nandan Sahaya today appealed to the militant groups to eschew violence and join the mainstream.

Speaking on the occasion of the 58th Republic day here, the Governor said this hilly state of Tripura could become peaceful and strong only if the youths stopped resorting to the path of violence.

Mr Sahaya said he was determined to wipe out insurgency in the state and called upon the people to come forward.

In the morning the Governor unfurled the Tricolour at the Assam Rifles ground here. A parade was also organised by the various para-military forces including CRPF, BSF, State Police and TSR.

Various dignatories observed the day by paying floral tributes at the Gandhi Ghat here.

Police said security measures throughout the state had been tightened following recent ULFA activities in neighbouring Asom. The security forces had also launched anti-insurgency operations in the remote hilly areas.

The BSF posted in the Tripura-Bangladesh border had maintained a close vigil on the bordering areas. Sniffer dogs had also been pressed into service in all important places of the state, sourced added.

No untoward incident was reported today, official sources said.
