CPM seeks PM's intervention into UCIL's waste materials in Jadugoda
Ranchi, Jan 26 (UNI) The CPI (M) has demanded Primer Minister Manmohan Singh's attention to the health hazards caused by leakage of waste materials from the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) based at Jharhand's Jadugoda.
Party's politburo member and in-charge of the state Brinda Karat in a letter to Dr Singh said a three-member delegation of the CPM recently visited the site and made an on-the-spot assessment.
The delegation found leakage at some pipes through which wastes of the UCIL were let out, the letter said adding the affluent mixed with water of Swarnarekha river rendering the local populace of surrounding seven villages endangered.
The villagers informed that due to wastes, a huge number of aquatic lives died. The affected people also alleged that the UCIL managemnt only promised to repair the damaged pipes but remained non-commital on providing safe drinking water to the villages.
The CPM urged the prime minister to look into the matter and order a high-level inquiry into the incident.
