No promises for public on Republic Day in Punjab:EC directive

Chandigarh, Jan 25 (UNI) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has directed the Punjab government not to make any announcement on Republic Day, that could be violative of the model code of conduct in view of the elections on February 13.

The Chief Minister and his ministers had been asked not to make any election related speeches at Republic Day functions where they will unfurl the national flag. They have also been instructed not to highlight the achievement of the government in their speeches.

An official spokesman stated here today that all Deputy Commissioners had been directed to inform the ministers attending the Republic Day functions in their respective districts about the election code of conduct.

The ECI has also asked the election observers to remain present at Republic Day functions tomorrow to monitor the election speeches of ministers.
