No political motive behind raids: Palanimanikam
Chennai, Jan 25: Union Minister of State for Finance S S Palanimanickam today denied any ''political motive'' behind the income tax (IT) raids at the premises of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) founder leader Vijayakant and his relatives.
"The IT raids were conducted based on valid informations that the actor and his relatives had failed to file their returns properly," said the minister
Moreover, there was a huge difference in the wealth details, which the actor had submitted before the Election Commission of India, he said.
He said the MLA and his wife had failed to file wealth tax returns for the last five years, despite owning wealth to the tune of Rs 2.50 crore and 2.35 crore respectively.
Mr Palanimanickam said Mr Vijayakant had recently stated that though he had acted in seven films during the last two years, he had incurred a loss of Rs five lakhs on each film.
Minister said that the IT department would initiate similar actions on any political leaders, if they had valid informations.
The Minister further, pointed out the IT officials had seized unaccounted documents and evidences worth Rs 11 crore from the premises of Mr Jeppiar.
