Minister firm on digital meters, drivers to intensify stir

Hyderabad, Jan 25 (UNI) Andhra Pradesh Transport Minister Kanna Lakshmi Narayana today said the government would not go back on its decision making it mandatory to fix electronic meters in autorickshaws to avoid tampering of meters by autoricksaw drivers.

The Minister said he failed to understand why the auto drivers, for whom the government was providing many concessions, were opposing the fixing of digital meters, which were beneficial to both the drivers and the commuters.

Meanwhile, Auto Drivers Unions decided to intensify their agitation which entered the third day.

Except the ruling Congress, members of all the opposition parties squatted on the busy RTC cross roads obstructing the traffic. Police were deployed in large numbers at the agitation spots to prevent any untoward incidents.

The state-owned APSRTC operated additional services in view of the autorickshaw strike.
