Kashmiri oncologist awarded membership of ASCO

Srinagar, Jan 25: A Kashmiri doctor has for the first time been awarded the coveted membership of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a leading organisation of the world involved in cancer research and cure.

Dr Sheikh Aejaz Aziz, an Additional Professor in the Oncology Department at the multi-specialty Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura, was yesterday awarded the ASCO membership for his contribution to cancer research.

Founded in 1964, ASCO exclusively serves physicians, researchers and medical professionals who treat people with cancer. It also sets standards for patient care worldwide and leads the fight for more effective cancer treatments, increased funding for clinical and transnational reach.

Dr Aziz has become the first doctor from Jammu and Kashmir to get the ASCO membership, granted after close scrutiny of research work and publications on cancer by team of international experts.

The membership will enable him to interact with prominent experts on cancer from different countries and find ways to prevent and cure the disease.

Dr Aziz, who is the founder member of the Cancer Society of Kashmir, did his MD (Internal Medicine) from the Kashmir University in 1987. Later, he did his DM (Oncology) from Madras University and fellowship in Paediatric Haeomology-Oncology from Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital Memphis, TN, US.

Dr Aziz has to his credit, more than 70 publications in various national and international journals besides attended many conferences around the world.
