Kalam gives last R-Day address of his term

New Delhi, Jan 25 (UNI) President A P J Abdul Kalam today delivered his last address to the nation, during his current five-year tenure, on the eve of the Republic Day.

Dr Kalam, who assumed office on July 25, 2002 as the eleventh President of India, will make way for his successor the same day this year, unless re-elected to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Dr Rajendra Prasad, the first President, was the only leader to hold the highest office for two full terms. He held the office on the Raisina Hills between January 26, 1950 and May 1962.

Mr V V Giri, who was Vice President, became President on May 3, 1969 following the death of Dr Zakir Husain and held the post till July 20, 1969. Mr Giri returned to Rashtrapati Bhavan on August 24, 1969 on being elected for a five-year term.
