7 years' RI for abetment of suicide

Nagpur, Jan 25 (UNI) The sessions court here today sentenced a man to seven years' rigorous imprisonment (RI) and fined Rs 3,000 for driving his wife to commit suicide.

The fourth Additional Sessions Judge S S Patil yesterday convicted Chandan Mohandas Chelwani (27), on charges under sections 498 (A) and 306 of the Indian Penal Code, according to police.

According to the prosecution, Chelwani's wife Nanda (23) was fed up of physical and mental torture by her husband and committed suicide by burning herself on April five, 2004.

The police had registered an offence on the basis of a complaint from Nanda's father Ishwar Tularam Bensiyani and later filed a charge-sheetbefore the court.
