Village farmers enter world carbon trading market

New Delhi, Jan 24 (UNI) Farmers sitting in remote villages of the country can now earn an income from carbon trading in the world market and have the satisfiction of contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gases.

This has been possible with 'Andhodaya', a leading NGO working among them to promote bio-gas, renewable energy and water harvesting joining the Chicago Climate Exchange(CCX).

The reduction in carbon emissions achieved by the NGO through a large number of small biogas plants, solar energy and rainwater harvesting plants will be sold in the exchange.

Director of the NGO Peter Thettayil said his organisation had installed around 20,000 biogas plants in south India to give them clean fuel and fertilizer to them.

But the farmers had so far not been thinking beyond that. Now association with CCX will bring them some income too as they will be contributing to reduction in carbon emmission by using a clean fuel.

He was talking to reporters after sigining an agreement with CCX CEO Peter Sander on the sidelines on the Seventh Delhi Sustainable Summit here.

Chicago Climate Exchange(CCX) is the world's first legally binding greenhouse gas emission registry, reduction and trading system having its members both major and small public and private ectiro entities.

Emission reduction achieved through CCX are significant in scale and impact.

CCX members gain practical experience by building an efficient management and monitoring system, while also acquiring cutting edge measurement and trading skills that will be needed in short and long term as the world comes to terms with the climate challenge.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Sanders said CCX was a sort of private Kyoto Protocal. Its members contribute to ten per cent of US carbon emissions.

He said he was very happy by his association with the Andhyodaya as it will bring credit to to the poor in rural India.
