Trading of Agricultural Produce affected in Karnataka

Bangalore, Jan 24 (UNI) The trading activities of agricultural produces in Karnataka was badly affected today with Agriculture Produce Marketing Committees (APMC) observing state-wide bandh in protest against the State Government's move to bring amendment to APMC Act.

According to official sources most of the 144 APMC's remained closed and traders held protest meetings in the premises of the market yard.

The traders were protesting against the State government's move to bring amendment to APMC act which paves way for multinational companies to enter into trading of agricultural produces directly from the farmers. The proposed amendment would also bring to an end to the monopoly of the traders in buying farm produces from the farmers.

Minister for Agriculture Marketing Sharana Basappa Darshanapur, speaking to UNI said that the amendment was being proposed to help the farming community to get remunerative prices and also generate more revenue for the state exchequer which would be utilised to improve infrastructure facilities for the benefit of the farmers and also traders.

The proposed amendment would be introduced in the Assembly Session beginning on January 25.
