Congress wants the government to fill vacant Council Chairman post

Bangalore, Jan 24 (UNI) Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Mallikarjuna Kharge today urged the State Government to take immediate steps to fill the Legislative Council Chairman post lying vacant since a long time.

Addressing newsmen here, he said that the Governor had appointed a proterm Chairman for the Council as the sitting Deputy Chairman of the Council was hospitalised.

Mr Kharge felt that in this situation the government should take steps to fill the vacancy and uphold the democratic values.

He said that Congress is enjoying majority in the 75-member house and his party candidate was expected to get elected to the post unopposed. He denied that there was no any unanimity in the party on the selection of the candidate for the post.

The KPCC would meet the Governor T N Chaturvedi on the issue and submit a memorandum urging him to prevail upon the state government to announce the calendar of events for the elections to fill the post, he added.

The post of Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council has remained vacant after end of the term of the incumbent Congress candidate V R Sudarshan since a couple of months.
