Cong, SAD renominate candidates who secured 50 percent votes

Chandigarh, Jan 24: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress have renominated all their nominees who had polled 50 per cent of the valid votes in the last assembly elections in Punjab.

In the last assembly elections, 19 candidates of the Congress and 10 of the SAD had got 50 per cent and more of the votes polled. The Congress had secured 62 of the 117 seats it contested in 2002, while the SAD got 41 seats.

Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh who contested from Patiala on Congress ticket secured 74.49 percent of the valid votes, while SAD chief and the then Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal got 54.21 percent of the votes. Capt Singh polled 46,750 votes while his SAD rival Sarup Singh Seghal got just 13,167 and lost his security deposit.

Capt Singh and Mr Badal are again in the field from their respective constituencies.

Mr Avtar Henry of the Congress, often refered to as the 'Badshah of Jalandhar', also chalked out an inmpressive victory by securing 64.49 percent of the polled votes. He secured 41,856 votes, while his nearest rival, Suresh Sehgal of the BJP got a mere 19,489 votes.

Mr Henry is again in the field while the BJP has changed its candidate.

In Ludhiana North, Mr Rakesh Pandey of the Congress, who is again in the field, secured 39,167 votes which was 61.07 per cent of the votes polled. His rival Pran Nath Bhatia got just 16,295 votes.

In the Fatehgarh Sahib constituency, Congress nominee Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa secured 53.56 per cent of the polled votes, while his nearest rival Nirmal Singh Khalon of SAD got about 45 per cent of the votes in a close contest. From the Valtoha segment, Congress candidate Gurchet Singh Bhullar who is again contesting, secured 50.44 per cent of the polled votes while his SAD rival Gurdial Singh was also impressive getting 44.06 per cent votes.

In Batala constituency, Congress nominee Ashwani Sekhri got 56.37 per cent of the votes polled as compared to his nearest rival Jagdish Sahni (BJP) who secured 40.46 percent. In the Qadian segment Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa (Cong) got 51.55 per cent of the polled votes while his rival Natha Singh (SAD) was close behind with 43.90 per cent.

From the Khanuwan segment, Congress candidate Pratap Bajwa secured 51.28 per cent of the polled votes while his nearest rival Sewa Singh Sekhwan got 44.29 per cent. In Pathankot, Ashok Sharma (Cong) got 56.93 per cent of the polled votes as compared to his rival Master Mohan Lal (BJP) who was far behind with just 35 per cent.

In Sujanpur constituency, Raghunath Shahi Puri (Cong) secured 57.41 per cent of the polled votes defeating Satpal Saini (BJP) who got 35.92 per cent. Sekri, Bajwa, Sukhjinder Randhawa, Shahi Puri, Tripat Bajwa have again been renominated by the Congress from the seats they had won in 2002. On the other hand SAD has again renominated Sekhwan and Khalon and the BJP has again expressed confidence in Satpal Saini, Jagdish Sahni and Satpal Saini. In Qadian, SAD has picked up Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal in place of Natha Singh, who passed away last year.

In the Beas segment, Jasbir Singh Dimpa (Cong) secured 50.61 per cent of the polled votes while his nearest rival Manjinder Singh Kang was very close behind with 50 per cent of the polled votes. Both are again facing each other in Beas.

Congress candidates Raj Kumar (Verka-reserved), Sardool Singh Jandiala (reserved) and Prof Darbari Lal (Amritsar Central) all got about 50 per cent of the polled votes and have again been renominated. Likewise the Congress has again renominated Jugal Kishore (Amritsar North), Harnam Dass Johar (Ludhiana West), Surinder Dawar (Ludhiana East) and Amrik Singh (Samrala) all of whom secured about 50 per cent of the polled votes.

SAD has again imposed faith in Gulzar Singh Ranike from Attari (reserved) who secured 62.02 per cent of the polled votes.

Suprisingly the Congress has retained Rattan Singh who had got merely 19,521 votes in the last polls. In the prestigious Gidderbaha segment, SAD had renominated Manpreet Singh Badal, who had secured 55.53 per cent of the votes.

Likewise SAD has renominated Ajit Singh Kohar (Lohiana), Manjit Singh Manna (Khadoor Sahib-reserved), Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon (Patti), Balbir Singh Ghunas (Bhadaur-reserved) and former SGPC chief Bibi Jagir Kaur (Bholath), who had all sercured between 50-55 per cent of the polled votes in the last elections.
