Srinagar, Jan 24 (UNI) Barely hours before the Republic Day, the Army today claimed to have averted a major tragedy by seizing about 50 kg of RDX in Kashmir.

Giving details, a defence spokesman said the Army, on specific information, seized a huge cache of war-like stores from Bhatpura general area today.

Besides 50 kg of RDX, he said one rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launcher, six rockets, one pistol, one pistol magazine, 16 pistol rounds, 84 under barrel grenade launchers (UBGLs) and 18 hand grenades were also seized during the operation.

These arms and ammunition could have caused a major tragedy in Kashmir, the spokesman said, adding a major tragedy has thus been averted by the Army with this seizure.

He said two more Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were seized from different places in the Kashmir valley.

In Anantnag district, troops seized an IED concealed in a steel thermos, the spokesman said, adding the IED was later destroyed.

Another IED was seized at Mantrigam in Baramulla district from a pressure cooker kept in a cement pipe, he said.

The spokesman said the IED was defused in time.

The Army has thus averted several incidents just before the Republic Day, he added.
