New Delhi, Jan 23 (UNI) A series capturing a breathtaking portrait of Planet Earth - its awe inspiring landscapes and its wildest and most elusive creatures - will premiere on television this February as an effort to raise awareness of the need for efforts to preserve the environment.

The 11-part series, to air on Discovery Channel from February 1, will explore animal life in a wide range of habitats - from the tropical climate of the Arctic to the freezing cold weather in the Antarctica and the daily struggle for survival by these living beings in extreme habitats.

The aim of the film, to air on Thursdays at 2000 hrs with a repeat telecast on the following Saturday at 1800 hrs, is to raise much needed awareness of the breathtaking beauty of nature among the people and thus make them realise the tremendous need to preserve the environment.

''The film, which brings out the immense beauty of Nature as never before by capturing breathtaking images from the World's remotest habitats - from the towering peaks of Nepal to the lush green of the Amazon and from the dry-sculpted crescents of the Sahara to the glistening polar ice-caps, is a laudable effort to arouse interest in Global environment among the public in a bid to sensitise them to the need of preserving it,''renowned Wildlife filmmaker and three time Green Oscar winner Mike Pandey said at a press meet in the capital to announce the telecast of the film.

From the world's greatest rivers and impressive gorges to the mightiest mountains, from the hidden underground world of caves to vast deserts, every corner of the earth will be explored in the series 'Planet Earth' ''The series beautifully captures how on one hand, Penguins incubate their babies in minus 70 degrees Celsius of freezing cold while on the other, the Kangaroos survive in 70 degrees C heat in Australia.

The film is indeed a laudable effort and brings out effectively the beauty, nature had to offer through never-before-seen" visuals.

In doing so it makes one realise the importance of these living beings, insects, animals and plants. It is only when one watches the Nature's beauty in its true form that one begins to respect it,''Mike said.

Produced at a budget of over Rs 100 crore, the series, narrated by legendary natural historian Sir David Attenborough, has been shot using high definition technology by 40 cameramen filming across 200 locations over the last five years.

The series premieres in India even before it airs on Discovery Channel in the Unites States.

According to Mr Pandey, 'Planet Earth' is the first series filmed entirely in high definition. Through stunning time-lapse sequences, viewers will witness the evolution of environments over thousands of years.
