BJP to renominate Navjot Singh Sidhu from Amritsar
New Delhi, Jan 23: Welcoming the Supreme Court's decision to stay the conviction of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu in the 19-year-old road rage case, the BJP today announced his renomination for the forthcoming byelection to Lok Sabha seat from Amritsar.
BJP President Rajnath Singh, when asked for a response on the Court's decision, said that the decision was a good omen and the Akali-Dal and BJP combination would work hard to remove the Congress government in Punjab and bring back Mr Sidhu -- who had quit his seat on moral grounds after the Punjab and Haryana High Court convicted him for three years in the road rage case resulting in the death of a person when he was a cricketeer -- to the Lok Sabha.
A Court bench comprising of Justice G P Mathur and Justice R V Raveendran had issued directions that the Punjab and Haryana High Court conviction would not be operative until the disposal of the appeal filed by Mr Sidhu against his conviction.
With this development Mr Sidhu will be the seeking his electoral luck to fill the vacancy caused by his own resignation.
The last day for filing nomination papers is on January 25.
