Technology can provide education and health in villages:Nair
Kochi, Jan 20 (UNI) Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman Madhavan Nair today said the gaps in education and health sectors in the rural areas can be filled with the help of space technology.
Addressing a gathering at a function here, he said modern technology can help in spreading education through tele-education facilities in rural areas.
Mr Nair said through education satellite EDUSAT, virtual classrooms can be held by eminent teachers to educate the rural populace effectively.
The technology would also help in imparting farming and related training to people in remote areas, he added.
He said around 2,000 students can be taught in one virtual classroom created by space technology.
To solve the language problem, he urged the local teachers to chalk out content for the classes.
Mr Nair said the lack of health facilities in the villages can be mitigated through tele-medicine.
He said with tele-medicine doctors in urban hospitals can treat people in remote areas through tele-conference.
The Chairman said through telemedcine, around 1,20,000 patients were treated so far.
Mr Nair was speaking at a function to honour the Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU Dr V N Rakjasekharan Pillai, with the first R R Varma award instituted by R R Varma Foundation.
