Meghalaya citizens flay tussle over chief ministership

Shillong, Jan 19 (UNI) Several citizens of Meghalaya have criticised the infighting in the state Congress over the post of chief ministership between incumbent J D Rymbai and his bete-noire D D Lapang.

At least 23 senior citizens of Meghalaya have expressed their concern to Congress president Sonia Gandhi over the proposed frequent change of guards leading to political instability in the state.

In an open letter to Ms Gandhi, the citizens urged the Congress chief to maintain status quo.

''The leadership crisis in the Congress has brought about confusion in the minds of the people and created consternation among the public,'' they said.

Yesterday, some NGOs faxed a message to Ms Gandhi, urging her to retain Mr Rymbai as the chief minister.

The NGOs also informed the Congress chief that if there was agitation and turmoil in the aftermath of change of leader, the AICC and the state Congress leadership would be held responsible.
