LU case posted to Jan 24

Lucknow, Jan 19 (UNI) The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court today fixed January 24 as the next hearing of a PIL seeking purging of hostels and developing an educational environment in the Lucknow University (LU).

A division bench, comprising Justices Pradeep Kant and A K Singh, passed the order on a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by a local lawyer, Jayant Tomar.

The LU presented before the bench the list of 65 expelled students. ''There are 229 students against whom action is pending. The list would be made available on the next hearing,'' LU administration said.

Earlier, the HC had ordered that the process of allocation of hostel to students be also completed by January 18.

On December 8 last year, LU Vice Chancellor R P Singh had ordered indefinite closure on the varsity's and got the hostels Vacated.

Hearing a PIL, the Allahabad HC, had on December 15 last, ordered the LU administration and police to get the hostels vacated at the earliest by December 17 and inform Court of the compliance on December 19.

On the instructions of HC, UP Secretary (Home) Rajendra Mohan Srivastava, Director General Of Police Bua Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police Rajeev Krishna, and the LU VC had appeared before the Court.

The Court had ordered the police to provide all possible assistance required to vacte the hostels.

Mr Tomar had requested the Court to implement the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations on student union elections for the smooth functioning of the university.
