Big B's of Punjab polls-Badal's, Brar's, Bhattal's, Barnala's

Chandigarh, Jan 18 (UNI) As Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh struggles to get a nomination for his brother Malwinder Singh from Samana, the Big Bs in the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) have managed to tickets for their near and dear ones.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhattal (Rajinder Kaur) who is in the fray from her traditional constituency Lehra Gagga, has managed the Congress ticket for her brother, Kuldip Singh Bhattal from Dhanaula.

Senior Congress minister Bajwa (Pratap) who is contesting from Khanuwan, has got the ticket for his younger brother Fateh Jang Bajwa from Sri Hargobindpur.

However at the top of the Big B list is SAD chief and former chief minister Prakash Singh Badal. While Mr Badal himself is in the field from his traditional constituency Lambi, he has given the ticket to about half a dozen of his relatives including his son-in-law Adesh Pratap Singh Kairon from Patti.

Mr Badal faces his cousin Mahesh Inder Singh, whom he had defeated in the last polls, from Lambi. Adesh Pratap is the grandson of Punjab strongman and former chief minister Pratap Singh Kairon.

Another prominent member of the B-clan in the electoral battle is Manpreet Singh Badal as the SAD nominee from the Gidderbaha segment.

Though Junior Badal, Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is the SAD general secretary and MP from Faridkot is not contesting the assembly polls, but his brother-in-law Bikramjit Singh, another Big B is the SAD candidate from Majitha constituency in Amritsar district. Birkramjit is the grandson of Surjit Singh Majithia, a former Union Minister of state who represented the Amritsar Parliamentary constituency in the 1950's. Mr Majitha was a prominent Congress leader of the border district in the fifties and early sixties.

Other relatives of the Badal family include Manjinder Singh Kang from Beas and Jagbir Singh Brar has been nominated from Jalandhar Cantt. Paramjit Singh a distant relative of the Badal family is in the fray from Guru Harshahi and Janmeja Singh Sekhon has been nominated from Ferozepur Cantt.

Another of the Big B's in the election arena is Barnala (Gaganjit Singh), son of Tamilnadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, from Dhuri as the SAD candidate. When it comes to politics, the Brar's cannot be left behind. Mr Rupjit Singh Brar, brother of senior Congressman and former MP Jagmeet Singh Brar is the Congress candidate from Kot Kapura. Another prominent Brar in the fray is Kanwarjit Singh, son of former chief minister Harcharan singh Brar from Muktsar.

Besides the Bhattal's, the other brother and sister team is the son and daughter of former chief minister, the late Beant Singh, who was another 'Big' name in Punjab politics in the 1980s. Mr Tej Prakash Singh and minister Gurkamal Kaur, the son and daughter respectively of the late Beant Singh, who are sitting MLAs from Jalandhar Cantt and Payal respectively have been given the ticket on merit.

Another prominent B who has managed the ticket for his relative is former Bihar Governor Buta Singh. His nephew Joginder Singh Mann has been renominated from Phagwara (reserve).

A Big B who will be making his first entry into politics is former Delhi Police Commissioner Pritam Singh Bhinder, husband of the late Mrs Sukhbans Kaur, a five time MP from Gurdaspur. Mr Bhinder will contest from Gurdaspur and is considered the best choice.
