HC reiterates order on release of 3,700 cusecs water in Ganga

Allahabad, Jan 18 (UNI) Allahabad High Court today reiterated its earlier order directing the authorities to discharge 3,700 cusecs water unabated in the river Ganga till completion of the Ardh Kumbh Mela.

The court also appreciated the efforts of advocate general S M A Kazmi for improving the level and quality of the Ganga water.

A Division Bench comprising Justices B S Chauhan and Ashok Bhushan passed the order on a PIL filed by Harichaitnya Brahmachari.

Mr Kazmi submitted a report, concerning the Ganga pollution, which was prepared in the presence of the monitoring committee members.

The report claimed 3,700 cusecs water was continuing unabated and it had produced visible improvement in the level as-well-as quality of water. The court will hear the case on February 1.

Mr Kazmi said the water level has increased to 16 cms and the BOD level has been generally close to permissible limit.

All other parameters regarding the water quality, including colour have been well within the permissible limit.

The Bench was also apprised of the report submitted by the Kanpur DM stating that the instructions with regard to the continued closure of 48 tanneries is being implemented.

The monitoring committee comprising four members was constituted on January 11, with instruction to submit daily report with regard to the status of closed industries as well as non-discharge of even one drop of untreated water in the Ganges from the tanneries of Kanpur.

The report submitted on a day-to-day basis confirmed the compliance of the HC order.
