HC asks Delhi Govt and Delhi Police to reduce accidents in Capital
New Delhi, Jan 18 (UNI) Expressing concern over rising cases of motor accidents in the Capital, the Delhi High today asked the Delhi Government and Delhi Police to initiate steps to rein in errant vehicles.
Taking suo mottu cognisance of a report in Times of India published-few moths back, a division bench of Justices Swatanter Kumar and H R Malhotra asked the Delhi Chief Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner to chalk out a plan to reduce accidents.
The Court appointed Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam as amius curriae to assist the court in the matter.
''Frame a policy and submit the proposal before the court by January 25,'' said the Judges in the order.
At least five persons die on the city roads every day in motor vehicle accidents.
Recently two students, both brothers, died when a call centre van rammed into the Maruti vehcle which was carrying them to a school.
The news report said a few months back 16 students of Mount Olivat Senior Secondary School had a miraculous escape when their mini bus overturned at Burari in northwest Delhi. Seven of the children were injured and rushed to hospital, while the bus driver fled.
