TN Govt abolishes corporal punishment in schools
Chennai, Jan 16 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu government today announced the abolition of corporal punishment in schools in the state.
This followed complaints from parents and voluntary organisations that the punishments exceeded the limits in the recent past, resulting in students committing suicide, an official release here said.
Accordingly, rule 51 of the state Education rules, which provided for corporal punishment to students, who had the habit of telling lies and using obscene language is being repealed, it said.
After incidents of affected students resorting to extreme steps were brought to his notice, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi constituted a high-level committee headed by former School education Director A Muthukrishnan and Educationist Ms Y G Parthasarathy to go into the issue.
Based on the recommendations of the committee, the state government has decided to do away with rule 51 of the state education rules, the release added.
