Shillong, Jan 16 (UNI) Fed up with frequent ''inner-squabblings'' in the Congress party in Meghalaya, senior citizens of the state have asked AICC president Sonia Gandhi to put a stop to the political wranglings in the state.

In an open letter to Ms Gandhi, altogether 23 citizens of the state urged the Congress chief to maintain the status quo as far as the ongoing tussle is concerned.

'' The leadership crisis in the Congress has brought about confusion and created consternation amongst the general public,'' the senior citizens stated.

'' The present move to dislodge Chief Minister J D Rymbai will give way to a regime that will be manned by 'doubtful' personalities whose 'negative' antecedents are well known,'' the letter reads.

Stating that the ''leadership issue'' within the Congress ''will totally destroy the image of the party'', the senior citizens apprised Ms Gandhi of the economic dynamics of the state that has already been badly affected.

''Ms Gandhi should exercise her wisdom and see that Mr Rymbai is not sacrificed at the altar of political expediency and lackadaisical leadership,'' they stated.

Meanwhile, three frontal NGOs in the state- Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, Federation Khasi Jaintia and Garo People and Synjuk ki Seng Samla Shnong - have expressed resentment over the move for change of leadership.

'' The proposed CLP meeting to elect a new leader should be stopped and the present leadership should be allowed to continue,'' HNYF president G H Kharshanlor said.

The NGOs also decided to send a petition to Ms Sonia Gandhi seeking her intervention in the matter.
