Prominent Mumbaikars plead Sanjay Dutt's cause

Mumbai, Jan 15 (UNI) Prominent citizens here have filed affidavits urging the designated TADA court here, which conducted trial into the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, not to sentence bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt to imprisonment.

Among those to sign the affidavits are Thespian Dilip Kumar, former Mumbai sheriff Nana Chudasama, and social workers Dr Yusuf Merchant and Vipula Kadr.

The TADA court has already convicted Sanjay Dutt under the Arms Act, holding him guilty for possessing an AK-56 rifle illegally.

Sanjay Dutt, however, was absolved of Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Act (TADA) charges.

The signatories have submitted that Sanjay Dutt has a good moral character and would not commit any crime if released by the court.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Dutt also moved an application before the court stating that there were no reported instances of bad behaviour on his part while out on bail. He also submitted that he came from a family closely associated with social work.

Sanjay Dutt also told the court that he has to look after his daughter Trishala, who is studying in the US, especially as his wife passed away due to cancer. Trishala's grandfather is old and ill, and there is no one else to care for her, Dutt told the court.

Dutt also sought to bring to the court's notice, his socially-relevant films like ''Lage Raho Munnabhai'' for which he has received immense appreciation from the film industry as well as from the people.
