Poor law and order situation in Gopalganj
Gopalganj, Jan 15 (UNI) With 110 murders and 41 incidents of looting during 2006, law and order situation continues to be a matter of concern in Gopalganj district forcing police and administration to remain on their toes.
District Superintendent Rakesh Rathi said here today that 72 people were killed by criminals while 38 newly married women lost their lives at the hands of their dowry-hungry in-laws in 2006.
He said a total number of 49 cases were registered under dowry acts in 2005 while it rose to 96 during the last year.
Mr Rathi said altogether 3465 criminals were arrested and sent to jails during the last one year, which included some of the most wanted gangsters like Rishi Muni Tiwari, Ghamalu Pandey, Dhananjay Mishra and others who had been evading arrest in connection with murders, loots and dacoities.
''District police has launched special drive to nab the notorious criminals who are at large,'' he added.
''With prompt action and thorough investigation, the police has succeeded in gathering enough evidence to ensure capital punishment for the three criminals while forty others have been sentenced to rigorous lifev imprisonment through speedy trials'', he said .
