Police fire teargass to disperse Mirwaiz's supporters in Srinagar

Srinagar, Jan 15 (UNI) Police burst teargas shells and resorted to baton charge to disperse demonstrators protesting against the grenade attack on the residence of Hurriyat Conference (HC) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at Nigeen this morning.

The supporters of the Mirwaiz took to streets in the down town, his including at historic Jamia Masjid, protesting against the attack.

However, when the demonstrators were marching towards main city, police resorted to baton charge to disperse them. However, when it had no affect, police fired teargass shells to disperse the protesters who were pelting stones.

Shops and business establishments in the downtown were closed after the news of the attack spread in the area.

Youths at Rajouri Kadal took to streets demanding arrest of those behind the attack. They blocked traffic and burnt tyres.

Traffic was also diverted to other routes.

However, life in other parts of the city remained normal.
