Jaya calls for dissolution of Chennai Corporation
Chennai, Jan 14 (UNI) AIADMK supremo and the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said the Chennai Corporation should be dissolved and a fresh election should be conducted immediately with the help of the army in view of the Madras High Court pronouncing a split verdict on the matter pertaining to the alleged violence during the local body elections in Chennai in October 2005.
In a press release here, Ms Jayalalithaa welcomed Justice F M Ibrahim Kallifullah, the second judge of the Bench direction to the State Election Commissioner(SEC) D Chandrasekaran to hold elections afresh in 99 wards out of 155 wards of the corporation by strictly adhering to the norms and providing police protection to enable free and fair polls.
She also welcomed Justice Kalifullah's dissenting judgment that the situation was extreme, which called for an extraordinary remedy.
Ms Jayalalithaa alleged it is an open secret that the anti-socials and rowdies associated with the DMK had indulged in violence, bogus voting and booth capturing on October 13, 2006 with the active connivance of the police in gross violation of the rules and it was nothing but a gruesome murder of democracy.
She said Chennai Corporation should not undertake any new schemes or developmental activities and must stop issuing any fresh orders till the conduct of the fresh elections.
Ms Jayalalithaa also demanded the resignation of Mr Chandrasekaran, Director General of Police D Mukherjee, City Police Commissioner, Letika Saran, Joint Police Commissioner S Jankit, among others.
