Nagpur, Jan 15 (UNI) The election to one ward in Nagpur, where civic polls are slated to be held on February 1, was today countermanded by the State Election Commission (SEC) following the death of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate there.

Additional deputy municipal commissioner Mr Ajay Ramteke told UNI that the SEC issued the order countermanding the election from ward number 133 (New Subhedar) because of the death of NCP nominee Mr Prakash Tiwari, who died on Saturday. A total of 22 candidates had remained left in the fray in the ward after the withdrawal of nominations.

Elections to the general body of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) would now be held in 135 of the 136 wards, Mr Ramteke said.

The election from ward number 133 would be held in due course of time after a fresh notification is issued to that effect, he clarified.

There are now 1,137 candidates in the fray from the 135 wards where elections will be held as scheduled on February 1.

Meanwhile, the allotment of symbols to the candidates in the fray was progressing smoothly and the final list of candidates would be issued on Wednesday, January 17, Mr Ramteke added.
