'Badge of Sacrifice' presented to widow of late Major Chaurasia

Mumbai, Jan 15 (UNI) Brigadier M K Mehta, Commander for Mumbai sub area, today presented the 'Badge of Sacrifice' to Ms Meeta Prasad, widow of the late Major Mukesh Chaurasia, who lost his life fighting insurgents at Dibrugarh district in Asom during a counter-insurgency operation on Januray 6, 2005.

''I am thankful to the Army and other associate institutions for this honour and for helping me to rehabilitate and locate a job with the ONGC '' an emotional Ms Prasad told UNI.

Earlier, Brigadier Mehta led the Headquarter (HQ) Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa Area on the 'Army Day' by laying a wreath at the War memorial of Late Subedar Joginder Singh at Colaba in south central Mumbai.

On the occasion, a message from the Chief of Army Staff, J J Singh commending the courage and valour of officers and jawans of the Indian Army was read out.

The Army Day is celebrated on January 15 every year to mark the occasion when for the first time an Indian, General K M Kariappa took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, from the outgoing British Commander-in-Chief Late Gen F R R Bucher on January 15, 1949.

Nowadays, the Army operates in some of the most varied and inhospitable terrains in the world and is largely involved in low intensity conflict in Jammu&Kashmir and the North-East.
