Mumbai, Jan 15 (UNI) Swiss power utility major ABB has been awarded a turnkey contract in India valued at Rs 186 crore by Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) to implement an integrated Network Manager SCADA/EMS/DMS (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition, Energy Management System, Distribution Management System) solution.

Informing the BSE, ABB India said the scope of the project includes design, engineering, supply, installation, testing and commissioning and is expected to he completed in around 24 months.

The system will monitor and control 830 main transmission and distribution substations spread across the state of Karnataka, including the city of Bangalore. This initiative will significantly help strengthen the transmission and distribution network for KPTCL and its constituent distribution utilities. KPTCL is Karnataka's leading power transmission utility and serves over 11 million customers across the state.

''ABB is a global leader in distribution automation solutions with a great heritage of technology and innovation. We have already executed six major city SCADA installations across India and are proud to be associated with KPTCL in this visionary project. It is yet another example of how technology can help bring greater grid reliability and efficiency through better monitoring, control and network management,'' Ravi Uppal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director ABB India, commented.

Network Manager SCADA DMS/EMS enables utilities to monitor and control their entire transmission and distribution networks from a single control room and in real time. The solution for KPTCL incorporates energy and distribution management applications such as load-sharing technology and availability-based tariffs, which encourage users to keep to pre-arranged schedules.

These features enable better planning and help to maintain a steady supply of power under normal conditions. They also facilitate quick restoration of power in case of outages, operational flexibility, archived data and reduction in losses caused by outages, besides bringing several operational efficiencies and commercial benefits.
