Mulky Rafique shot dead in a police encounter

Manipal, Jan 14 (UNI) Mulky Rafique, the main accused in Polali Ananthu and BJP leader Sukananda Shetty murders was killed in a police encounter near Udupi Railway Station in the early hours of today.

Inspector General of Police (Western Range) S N Sathyanarayana Rao told newsmen after visiting the encounter spot, that Rafique, who had escaped yesterday while being taken back to Mysore after interrogation at Devarakoli near Madikeri.

A massive search was taken up and police after intercepting the mobile calls made by Rafique learnt that the area of origin of calls was in between Manipal and Udupi range.

The police laid a trap near the Railway Station and Rafique was spotted with one of his associate coming to board a train.

On seeing the police Rafique fired two rounds at the police party who in retaliation fired 10 rounds and shot him dead on the spot.

The body was taken to Government Hospital for postmortem.
