K'taka Govt to announce new guidelines for compensation to crop loss

Bangalore, Jan 14 (UNI) Karnataka Government will announce a new guidelines for payment of compensation for crop loss due to natural calamities, Chief Minister H D Kumarswamy said today.

"The guidelines, based on scientific basis, would be announced in the State budget for 2007-08", he added.

Participating in 'Hello CM' program on farmers issue conducted by Doordarshan, Bangalore center here, he said that the farmers were vulnerable to crop losses due to numerous reasons such as floods, draught, elephant menace and were deprived of adequate compensation.

He said that the state government has plans to stop migration of youth to urban areas in search of employment.

Stating that more self employment schemes would be introduced in in the rural areas he said that " top priority would be given to introduce such schemes under the Suvarna Gramodaya project which will adopt 1000 villages for providing basic infrastructure facilities. Officials have already been instructed to work on the schemes," he added.

The Chief Minister urged the farmers particularly in North Karnataka to take up Dairy farming in a big way and not just limit themselves to land cultivation. "There is a need to diversify to other occupations as Dairy and Horticulture." Mr Kumarswamy assured to set up a separate marketing facility for the sale of flowers in the city.

The farmers who took part in the program asked questions on issues like crop insurance, suicides, power and water utilisation.
