Hardcore criminal Mulky Rafique shot dead in police encounter

Manipal, Jan 14 (UNI) Hardcore criminal Mulky Rafique, the main accused in the Polali Ananthu and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Sukhananda Shetty murders, was killed in a police encounter near Udupi Railway Station in the early hours of today.

Inspector General of Police (Western Range) S N Satyanarayana Rao told newsmen here, after visiting the spot, about 200 meters from the Railway Station, that Rafique escaped yesterday by jumping from the police jeep near Devarakoli near Madikeri while being taken back to Mysore after interrogation in connection with Polali murder case.

Intensive search was launched in forest area to nab him.

Mr Rao said that on intercepting the mobile calls Rafique was receiving it was found that the calls orginated from a place in between Udupi and Manipal. Trap was laid near Udupi Railway Station Godown, Rafique, who came in a motorbike along with another accomplice at around 0550 hrs to board the train, on seeing police party, fired two rounds in an attempt to escape. Police in retaliation fired 10 rounds and shot him dead on the spot. However, the accomplice escaped in the two wheeler.
