Coldest night of season in Kashmir; temp dips to - 6.1 C

Srinagar, Jan 14 (UNI) People in Kashmir braved the coldest night of the season so far with minimum temperature plummeting to minus 6.1 degree Celsius due to which a major portion of the famed Dal Lake was frozen this morning.

Bone chilling cold with a very blustery wind made the weather all the much colder in the entire Valley.

People shivered in the biting cold and as the temperature went below the freezing point, water pipes in several areas were jammed.

Weather office here said while the minimum temperature was recorded at 6.1 degree Celsius, which was the coldest of the season so far, the maximum was at 9.3 degree Celsius.

A major portion of the world famous Dal Lake was frozen this morning and people were seen cutting the ice to make way for boats and 'shikaras'. Many parts of other tributaries were also frozen.

However, the ice melted as the day progressed.

The weather office said westerlies from Pakistan were entering Jammu and Kashmir almost everyday but not hitting the entire state.

It said the chill was likely to continue for some more days.

The Met office said some of the disturbances were hitting northern part of Kashmir which resulted in snowfall on the upper reaches of the Valley.
