Prem Singh congratulates Chief Justice of India designate

New Delhi, Jan 13 (UNI) Delhi Assembly Speaker Prem Singh has congratulated Chief Justice of India designate K G Balakrishnan, who takes up the embellished position tomorrow, saying it is a matter of great pride for the downtrodden and underprivileged people of the country.

Mr Justice Balakrishnan would be the first 'Dalit' to become Chief Justice of India.

''As an egalitarian and libertarian embedded with vast wisdom and knowledge of the Indian society and laws, you will certainly endure assertion of protection of human rights of all those of our poor countrymen who deserve justice through the subliminal blessing of courts in our country,'' he said in a statement today.

Mr Singh had earlier written to the Prime Minister demanding that people from the Schedule Caste and Schedule Tribes should be given ''proper representation'' in high constitutional posts in order to bring them into the mainstream.
