Wrongly paid compensation will be rectified: State to HC

Mumbai, Jan 12 (UNI) The Maharashtra government has filed an affidavit before the Bombay High Court assuring that any compensations given under the Flood Relief Disbursement Scheme to persons affected by the deluge in July 2005 on the basis of misrepresentations shall be rectified and appropriate action taken against them in accordance with law.

A Division Bench comprising Justice H L Gokhale and V M Kanade were hearing a public interest litigation filed by Salvador Swami, a social activist, alleging that in Khar-Bandra area, compensation amounts were siphoned off in the name of fictitious persons.

In particular, the petitioner indicated the case of Murty Gali in Khar, where according to him the erstwhile slum had been removed by the municipal authorities and the Western Railway in 2003.

However, there was no encroachment on this land later but after the 2005 floods, several persons claiming to be living in Murty Gali claimed compensation, he alleged.

The court, however, disposed of the PIL after getting an assurance from the government that it would look into the matter.
