Mumbai, Jan 11 (UNI) The ruling Shiv Sena-BJP alliance in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today reached an understanding on seat-sharing for the upcoming civic elections with the Sena contesting 155 seats and BJP 72.

Shiv Sena spokesperson Manohar Joshi and BJP general secretary Vinod Tavade told UNI that after hectic parleys for the last few days, both the parties came to an understanding tonight and finalised the modalities for the February 1 polls.

The BJP managed to get 72 seats for themselves after hard bargaining, three more than what they had contested in the last civic elections, party sources said.

Mr Tavade said there was hard bargaining from BJP group leader Parag Alavani whose seat has become reserved and was alloted to the Sena. In compensation, BJP demanded two seats in south-central Mumbai which was not accepted by the Sena.

Negotiations reached a crescendo on this point and finally BJP agreed to take the two seats which Shiv Sena conceded.

With this development, the Shiv Sena-BJP has scored the first victory by declaring their seat-adjustment while the Congress-NCP has yet to reach any seat-sharing formula and so do the third front comprising of all the factions of the Republican party and others.
