Rupee opens low at 44.63/64 against US dollar

Mumbai, Jan 12: Rupee today opened low at 44.63/64 against the US dollar compared to yesterday's close of 44.58/59 per US dollar on fresh demand from Foreign banks and investors, dealers said.

Later it fluctuated in a narrow range between 44.60 to 44.63 per US dollar on some short covering by banks.

''The Rupee was lower for the day but off early lows despite the surge of the dollar overseas. The persisting combination of broad dollar gains and negative FII flows weighed on the Rupee in early trades, resulting in an opening below 44.60. The Infosys earnings report and rapid recovery in stock indices boosted the Rupee to hold a range around 44.55/56 for a major part of the session,'' dealers said.
