Mumbai, Jan 12 (UNI) The Harmony Art Foundation has sponsored a month-long International Sculpture Residency which brings together 21 sculptors from different parts of India and abroad.

The ongoing Residency, which culminates at Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City in Navi Mumbai, features a diverse global community of artists ranging from young and upcoming talents to master veterans from India and countries like Bulgaria, Israel and Japan. This is the first time in the history of Mumbai that an International Residency has been organised so close to the city, said Tina Ambani, who is spearheading the foundation since its launch in 1995. The Harmony Art Foundation, in its first of the series of the programmes, aims at supporting a wider range of contemporary art practices.

The Residency offers the sculptors, at varying stages of their artistic trajectories, access to the best of modern facilities and conveniences in addition to complete freedom in the choice of medium, material and tools.

Talking to reporters, Ms Ambani said the Residency was conceived keeping in mind the need for private support for non-mainstream art practices such as sculpture, environmental and video installation which do not enjoy the same viability as two-dimensional art practices.

''This Residency is a measure of our commitment to art in the widest sense of the term. It will facilitate creative exchange across cultures and go a long way in giving contemporary Indian art practices a stronger platform on the global stage'', said Mrs Tina A Ambani, chairperson of the Harmony Art Foundation.

''The intimacy of the work space at the Residency offers the participating artists not just the opportunity to get to know one another at a personal level, but also to understand and learn from a wide array of creative approaches and material processes'', she said.

The ongoing residency will set the blue-print for subsequent workshop-based programs through which the Foundation will gradually build an infrastructural base that will include state-of-the-art technology and comprehensive databases of material resources.

She said earlier, the royal families used to support the art and now the corporate houses have come forward for the same.

In the Harmony Art Foundation Residency, however, iron and steel have been approached in a distinctly modern manner. While one artist uses iron sheets of varying thickness, that are cut to construct strong representative and abstract forms, some others have used readymade iron pipes in a similar manner to construct dramatically abstract compositions that are assembled and welded together with dexterity.
