Five Maoists arrested;illegal gun factory busted in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Jan 12 (UNI) In a major breakthrough, a joint team of the Orissa and Andhra Pradesh police traced a gun factory run by Maoists near Kalunga in Sundargarh district bordering Jharkhand today and arrested five insurgents.

Police also seized several equipment used in manufacturing 303 rifles, as well as a laptop, photocopier, Maoist literature and cash amounting to the Rs.10 lakhs from the possession of the arrested Maoists, who included two couples.

Police said the Maoists were running the gun manufacturing unit in a hamlet at Farsatoli close to Kalunga, producing 303 gun by assembling various parts collected clandestinely.

The arrested Maoists were subjected to further interrogation as the police seized some maps from their possession, including a detailed sketch of the Rourkela Steel Plant, District Police Headquarter and the Police Reserve Line located in the steel city of Rourkela.

Acting on a tip off from one arrested left wing ultras technical wing commander, the Andhra Pradesh Police sought the help of the Rourkela police to locate the hide out of the Maoists, and thus raided the places and arrested the Maoists.

According to information, these Maoists were earlier residing in Pune but later shifted to Andhra Pradesh and finally settled in Orissa-Jharkhand border to run the rifle manufacturing unit.

Police had kept the identity of the arrested Maoists secret as the detailed interrogation was still going on to ascertain their plan of action and other strategies. Sources said the arrested Maoists were also stayed in Rourkela steel city for sometime before shifting to the Farsatuli hamlet under Kalunga Police station.
