New Delhi, Jan 12: Centre of Indian Trade Unions has opposed the propose move by Director General Hydrocarbons to ''divert'' ONGC rigs for use by private companies in the oil and gas exploration sector under the garb of 'rig pool'.

CITU expressed concern on the move that had been reinitiated ostensibly to put pressure on ONGC, which had early last year refused to share its rigs with competitors like Reliance, Essar and others, a statement issued by organisation's President M K Pandhe said today.

Claiming that ONGC's strength lay in the fact that it had a fleet of 30 offshore rigs, some owned some contracted, as against only three offshore rigs owned by Reliance, CITU said it would oppose any move to bail out the private operators at the cost of ONGC.

It urged the government to seek clarification from DGH as to how blocks for oil/gas exploration were awarded to private players without verifying whether they had wherewithal to undertake such operations.
