13 convicted in '92 post-Babri masjid demolition violence in Bharuch

Vadodara, Jan 12 (UNI) A fast-track court has convicted 13 people, accused in the riots and large-scale violence in Bharuch city after the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in 1992.

Pronouncing the verdict in the 14-year-old case yesterday, Bharuch district additional sessions judge D D Rajput awarded three years jail term to eight accused, while five others were sentenced to undergo six months imprisonment.

Of the 21 people chargesheeted in the case, the court acquitted four for lack of evidence. Three had died during the trial, while one accused was still absconding.

According to the prosecution case, following the demolition of Babri Masjid in Ayodhya on December 6, 1992, violence broke out in Marutinagar and New Anandnagar areas of Bharuch city. A 500-strong mob went on the rampage in these areas, attacked policemen and snatched away a rifle from an SRP jawan. The security personnel fired six rounds to quell the mob.

Later, police arrested 20 of the 21 persons accused in the riots and filed chargsheets against them.
