12 parties submit memorandum to Asom Guv for Assy session

Guwahati, Jan 12 (UNI) A delegation of twelve political parties today met Asom Governor Lt.Gen (Retd) Ajoy Singh and submitted a memorandum demanding an urgent session of the state assembly to discuss the present law and order situation in the state.

Talking to newsmen here, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said the Asom government had totally failed to control the law and order situation in the state and demanded Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's resignation on moral grounds.

''The Congress-led state government has totally failed to provide security to innocent people and, therefore, it should resign immediately owing moral responsibiity,'' the delegation demanded in the memorandum, Mr Mahanta disclosed.

He said the delegation of twelve political parties of the state had an extensive tour in the upper Asom districts, on a fact finding mission as well as restoration of peace.

''We have witnessed the insecurity of those hapless people and the most unorganised relief and medical treatment being offered to the victims by the state administration,'' he said.

''There was no amount of sincerity and feeling of compassion as was expected from the local administration and everything seems to be laidback on ''chalta hai'' effort. There is no administrative planning or reassurance,'' it pointed out.

''We are totally dissatisfied to see such a sorry state of affairs on one side and on the other, there has been a scarcity of commodities like food stuff in the affected areas,'' the memorandum said.

''Hence, we are calling on your honour today to convene an emergency special session of the state assembly by exercising your constitutional prerogative (under article 174 of the Constitution so that such a life and death situation of public importance could be discussed on the floor of the state assembly,'' the memorandum said.

Criticising the Centre, Mr Mahanta said the government had no definite policy to solve the ULFA problems.

They demanded holding of ''immediate direct and unconditional'' talks with the banned ULFA for permanent peace in the state.

The delegation appealed to the civil society of the state to rise to the occasion and help in restoring peace and unity in the state.

The twelve political parties were AGP (P), NCP, AUDF, PLP, RCPI, RSP, CPI(ML), JAM, JD(U), JD(S), SP and RJD.
