Trouble torn area of Asom should be handed over to army: Tariq

Patna, Jan 11(UNI) Taking strong exception of the killing of Biharis in Asom by the ULFAs, the Nationalist Congress Party(NCP) today demanded that the Centre should immediately intervene into the situation and handover the "trouble torn sensitive areas to the army".

NCP National General Secretary Tariq Anwar told UNI here that the Centre and the state government should both foil the attempts of the destabilising forces like the ULFA, aimed at creating separate statehood feelings among the people of Asom and Bihar living there.

He said in case the Asom government was incapable to control the situation, the Centre should immediately intervene and hand over the sensitive places of the state to army and deploy adequate number of paramilitary forces to control the "situation" of Asom.

Mr Anwar said the attacks on Biharis, who had either settled there or were seasonal migrants, was a "conspiracy of the separatist forces active" in Asom.

Mr Anwar said his party, which is an alliance partner of the Union government, would pressurise the Prime Minister to take effective action for containing the situation in Asom.

Aggrieved at the large scale killing of the Biharis, Mr Anwar said the victims' families were shattered and facing livelihood related problems.

He has also asked the Centre to rehabilitate the affected families and provide them compensation. The NCP leader said that he would raise the issue before the Prime Minister.
