North-West continues to reel under cold wave

New Delhi, Jan 11 (UNI) A cold snap continued to trouble North-West India today after claiming 168 lives across the nation so far.

Uttar Pradesh has witnessed 109 deaths, Bihar 35, Punjab and Haryana 19 and North Bengal five in the cold.

However, Uttar Pradesh recorded above normal temperatures after the biting cold wave since last two weeks.

In Delhi, the minimum temperature rose to 5.2 degrees Celsius from yesterday's 3.8 degrees.

However, the minimum was still two degrees below normal with the weatherman forecasting that the mercury will settle around 4 degrees over the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, after a brief relief from the chilling cold in Kashmir, nights have become colder again with minimum temperature plumetting to minus 5.6 degrees , about 3.6 degrees below normal.

In Delhi, though the let-up in temperature, the minimum was still two degrees below normal with the weatherman forecasting that the mercury will settle around 4 degrees over the next 24 hrs.

On Monday, the mercury plummeted to the season's lowest of 2.6 degrees , the second lowest in the last five years in the national capital.

An Airports Authority of India spokesperson said flight operations were by and large normal in the morning barring a few delays.

In Kashmir, parts of the famed Dal Lake were again frozen partially today. However, the frozen portion melted again as the day progressed.

The night will remain cold during the next 48 hours. The day remained warm as the maximum temperature was recorded at 8.2 degrees, about four degrees above normal. However, it was 11 degrees yesterday in Kashmir.

In Uttar Pradesh a marked rise in temperatures accompanied by bright sunshine brought some respite from the chilly weather condition in Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Faizabad and Jhansi divisions.

However, Allahabad, Sultanpur, Gorakhpur, Bareilly and Agra divisions witnessed slight fall in night temperatures, met office told UNI today.

Agra at 4.8 degrees was the coldest place in UP for the second consecutive day. Allahabad recorded 7.4 degrees , followed by Gorakhpur 7.3 and Bareilly 7.5 degrees .

The mercury touched minus 1.0 degrees at Adampur in Punjab with minimum temperature hovering at four to five degrees below normal.

While Churu recorded 0.9 degree , three degrees below normal and remained the coldest in the state, the temperature in Jaipur plunged to 3.2 degrees, five degrees below normal.

Cold wave conditions, prevailing in most parts of Punjab and some parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, are likely to continue for the next two days, according to the Weather Office here.

Despite a bright sunshine greeting the people cold wave swept across Chandigarh and its adjoining areas during the day. The city recorded the minimum at 2.2 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal, against 3.0 degrees registered yesterday.

A piercing cold wave lashed Amritsar with the minimum dipping to minus 0.7 degrees, five degrees below normal.

The minimum fell four degrees below normal at Ludhiana and Patiala, recording 2.4 degrees and 2.6 degrees respectively.

Some parts of Haryana also reeled under cold wave with the temperature hovering two degrees below normal. Narnaul in Mahendergarh district recorded 1.0 degrees while Ambala and Karnal registered two degrees below normal at 4.7 degrees and 4.6 degrees respectively. Hissar recorded 6.0 degrees which was, however, one degree above normal.

Cold wave also lashed Himachal Pradesh and harsh cold wave conditions prevailed in the tribal areas where lakes, springs and natural water bodies have already frozen. The mercury hovered at minus 4.7 degrees as against 5.4 degrees recorded yesterday.at Kalpa in tribal Kinnaur district.

Intense cold wave also lashed Sundernagar in Mandi district and Bhuntar in Kullu district with the minimum temperatures recording at minus 0.4 degree and minus 1.5 degrees , two degrees below normal. Shimla and its surrounding areas were also under the impact of cold wave with the capital town recording the minimum at 2.3 degrees .

Shimla recorded a marginal drop in the day temperature, which stood at 11.9 as against 12.1 degree recorded yesterday, while Sundernagar and Bhuntar recorded maximum temperatures of 18.6 and 18 degrees , the met office said.

Manipur also experienced a cold and chilly day as the mercury plumetted to 3.5 degrees and the maximum temperature was recorded at around 24.1 degrees .
